A Baker Boy Hat is the Accessory to Wear to the Shein NYFW Virtual After-Party, and We Have a Promo Code!

virtual after party at remote lounge new york

Well it’s been an unconventional year, so that calls for an unconventional after party! Remote Lounge New York is excited to bring you the unofficial after party for Shein’s virtual show as part of New Your Fashion Week, and we have an exclusive Sheinside promo code so that you can get a discount on this season’s hottest accessory: a baker boy hat. Shein has the hat available in several different colours to match any outfit. Don’t worry this party is also virtual and completely safe, anybody is welcome to tune in after the show is finished streaming to show off your own outfits and chat about your favourite pieces from the show. There is no dress code for the virtual party, but we suggest dressing to impress! There are so few opportunities to get dolled up these days, I’m planning to take full advantage!

What is a baker boy hat?

While we’ve recently seen the revival of fashion trends from the 90s and early 2000s this one is really throwing it back, all the way to the 1910s and 1920s! During World War I women started to take on a lot of jobs traditionally done by men out of necessity, and as such they started adopting their style of dress as well. Makes sense, it’s tough to work the factory floor in a dress. One of those pieces that they adopted was the baker boy hat, also known as a poor boy, newsboy, or fisherman’s hat. In the early part of the last century it was most popular in Britain and Italy, you may have seen it on characters in the show Peaky Blinders, and Suzy in The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel is usually wearing one.

Why is it back in women’s fashion now? Well there seems to be a surge in the popularity of hats as an accessory amongst many designers. Recent shows by Dior and Saint Laurent also had a variety of hat styles, including the beret and the baker boy. Women sported men’s hats out of practicality in the 1910’s, but in the 1920s it was about making a feminist statement. Perhaps wearing what has traditionally been a men’s hat is a statement of empowerment. Or maybe it just looks cute. Let’s be real, a hat is a hat and anybody can wear one no matter how they identify.

baker boy hats are in this season!

Shein’s Virtual Show for New York Fashion Week

This is going to be an amazing event, all you need to do to ‘get an invite’ is download the free Shein app for your smartphone or tablet. The show starts streaming at 2pm New York time on September 19th, and this is not your typical fashion show! The show starts with several influencers ‘walking’ on their own Instagram feed which will be streamed by using the Shein app as a hub so you don’t have to hop from feed to feed. The influencers will be showcasing pieces from various new collections by Shein. I think this is such a wonderful idea because it will show the pieces on all kinds of bodies. Including a variety of body types is something the fashion industry is slowly starting to improve upon (thanks Rhianna x Fenty!), but it’s definitely still not the norm. It really should be though, because the reality is that we all come in different shapes and sizes and that’s beautiful!

Once all of the collections have been shown, you will have a chance to make your runway debut. Yes, you! You can submit your own walk using the hashtag #WalkYourWonderful on Instagram. Obviously you should include some pieces from Shein, but other than that the styling is entirely up to you! I think this is such a cool idea, I will definitely be taking part!

Oh and if all that wasn’t enough, they are also going to have performances from SHY’M, Stefflon Don, Rita Ora, and Ellie fricking Goulding. No big deal, whatever, I’m not even that excited. Perhaps more importantly though is that Shein will be donating a portion of all sales made for the next month to the Dress for Success foundation. Dress for Success is an organization that helps women achieve economic independence by providing them with clothing for job interviews and work that they are unable to afford on their own. Very cool!

The After Party and the Promo Code!

Okay, so now that you know that you get a chance to be a part of a Shein fashion show, make sure that you use that promo code above to get some amazing new pieces. Don’t forget a baker boy hat! We’ll get our virtual after-party started around 8pm here in New York, see you there or see you on the runway!

New York City Travel on a Budget: Coupons For UK and US Visitors.

new york city on a budget

As New York City is one of the most prestigious places in the world, people often think that it’s impossible to travel there on a budget or with very little money as possible. This article will show the various options you have at your disposal to make your trip to New York City as affordable as possible.

Use Hotwire Coupons for Accommodations

One of the biggest expenses on a trip is always hotel or other accommodations, particularly in a big city like New York it can be difficult to find a good quality place to stay at a reasonable price. Enter Hotwire! We found some great online coupons at CouponFeed.org, you can find some deals specific to NYC, or there are general purpose coupons as well that will help you save some money. For UK visitors there’s lots of meal deal and hotel promotions available at DiscountGo.co.uk.

They mostly do hotels, but if you need a car rental they often have promo codes for those too. Although I wouldn’t recommend driving in New York, take a cab or public transit!

The Activities

There are many activities available in NYC regardless of your budget. Granted, many of them are expensive, but there are quite a few things you can do without spending money or spending very little.

Museums and Discount Days

Many of the museums have discount days or “pay as you wish” days. The most significant thing about this is that the days vary between museums, so it’s entirely possible to go to museums for a whole week and spend very little money at all on the experience. The museums that have suggested admission are also very popular. Two of these are the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History.

Both the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and the Staten Island Museum have free admission on Tuesdays, the Bronx Zoo, and New York Botanical Gardens on Wednesdays, the Children’s Museum of the Arts and the Museum of Arts and Design on Thursdays, the American Folk Art Museum, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Morgan Library and many more have free admission on Fridays.

Some museums even have free admission on the weekends, such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Jewish Museum, and the Frick Collection. This is great because in many cities you are bored on the weekend and forced to spend money or sit in your hotel room, but you still have these options available.

Summer Concerts

Summer is probably the best month to go to visit. Think about it. During the day, you go sightseeing and visit museums often for free, and then during the afternoon or evening, you can go to many of the thousands of free street concerts. The following travel tips will help you find a great concert when you’re done with your cultural intake at the museums.

Central Park Summerstage

Although some of the concerts held at the Rumsey Playfield are benefits, the vast amount of them is free and frequent. You should check out the timetables at Central Park to see what’s playing when.

New York Philharmonic

Every year for a week at the beginning of July the New York Philharmonic performs in all five New York City boroughs. The Bronx and Staten Island concerts are traditionally held indoors, but Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens take place under the open sky and are free.

The Met in the Parks

The Metropolitan Opera performs six concerts in various parks around New York Cities during July as well, completely free!

There are many more free festivals and concerts throughout the year. Check out the latest travel tips available online for the most up to date information. NYC is one of most significant cities, but visiting it can be expensive. With little extra planning, you can visit New York on a budget without sacrificing any of the fun.

2018 Design Trends

Alright, so let’s get in to the actual trends. Some of them may come and go quickly, but others like responsive design are around to stay and you should make sure that your website takes advantage of them.

1. Responsive Web Design

Nowadays people have started browsing website via various devices such as mobile, tablet, laptop and much more. You need a mobile-friendly and responsive website that can work on different devices and browsers easily. This one is definitely not a trend, the future of the internet is mobile and if you’re website is not responsive you are missing out on as much as 60% of your potential traffic.

2. Focus on Video

If an image says a lot about your brand, then the video may work wonder. Homepage background videos can be very beneficial as they can tell a long story behind your services and products within few seconds. You need to have lots of videos on your website. There’re lots of online stores that also have different videos for their different products or services. Video gives a clear idea about product and service. This is an easy way to understand your service or product.

3. Rich Animation

You should add animations such as hovers and gifts to make your site more attractive and engaging. You can introduce something unique and attractive that gives a more engaging experience than static graphics. Remember not to overdo it though, you don’t want every single thing jumping around on the website. Remember those terrible Flash websites back in the day? To be honest we are glad that Apple killed it.

4. Storytelling That Is Interactive

You should have something interesting that can attract visitors. Your interactive storyline will surely compel visitors to come to your website and read it. For some great examples check out the Awwwards website.

5. Digital First Branding

Your website should be user and SEO friendly. It should have proper navigation and anchor text. There should be a proper interlinking and heading text. You should have relevant images, text, videos, design, and information about your product and services. It’s also really important to keep your website up to date, it is frustrating for visitors to find incorrect information or see tons of products that are out of stock.

6. Content That Is Long-Form

Your website content plays a very vital role in turning visitors into your website to a customer. You can post interactive and catchy content on your every web page. It helps visitors know how they can approach you. You can post detailed information about your products and services via website content. Think of your website as your 24/7 sales team, anybody at any time can find out more information about your product/services, book with you, buy product, and it can all happen while you are asleep or on vacation!

7. Design That Is Simple

Your website design should be elegant and simple. A messy and over optimized site cannot impress the visitors. You should look for a simple design for your website that can match with your branding and particular business theme. A busy website with lots of images, banners and slides can be very unattractive. You should look for a sophisticated and clean website. It can improve navigation, simplicity, and legibility. You should go with the minimalist design and focus on user interface. Keep your website design simple and easy to understand.

8. Original Photographs

Your original Photographs are the best thing on your website to stand out from your competitors. Promote the use of photographs of your own or a professional photographer. However, if you want to use stock images make sure you customize them to make the image your own so that you don’t have the same images on your website as all of your competitors.

Things to Consider When Starting a Small Business

things to consider when starting a small business

A lot of people like the idea of starting their own business, and while we encourage anybody who wants to start out on their own entrepreneurial journey we also want to give them some advice. Running your own business might be the hardest thing you will ever do, and we learned a lot in the years that Remote Lounge was open!

Seriously. We didn’t just learn how to mainline caffeine into our veins. We learned valuable methods for running and operating a business. In New York, no less. Remote Lounge might be no more, but we want to pass on some of the lessons that we learned.

It’s More Expensive Than You Think, Use Coupons!

Running a business is very expensive and with various fees, licenses, and insurance there may be a lot of costs that you have not even considered. So, wherever possible try to save some money! One aspect of your business that you might not realize there are coupons for is your website. Obviously it’s very important to have a (mobile-friendly) website these days, and we found some godaddy promo codes. Don’t worry if you use a different host, that website has them all covered. You can try to find some for your necessary business supplies, food if you offer that, and pretty much anything to be honest. You probably won’t be able to find one for your lease though, sorry.

It’s Harder Than You Think, Kind Of

The hard part is sitting down and coming up with a good business plan before you register a domain name or buy any equipment. This step is so challenging that most people skip it entirely, they have a vague notion of what to do (maybe they worked at a similar business before) and they think they’ll start now and figure it out later. Trust me, once you are up and running you will be so busy you will not have time to ‘figure it out’. And if you don’t have a plan, things can get off track very quickly! If you only do one thing from this article let it be this: write out a business plan before you do anything else.

Do Market Research and Plan Funding

This kind of goes hand in hand with the business plan, but a lot of people come up with a big plan according to what they think is best and never talk to a potential customer. A part of any business plan should include what you have discovered from market research. That can be done by questionnaires, informal interviews, posting on social media, polling, etc. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, and you don’t need to hire a firm to do it for you.

The other thing you need to consider is where you are going to come up with the money to purchase equipment, pay for any licenses, buy insurance, put a deposit down on a lease, etc. If you’re going to fund that all yourself out of pocket then that’s great, and honestly the best way to do it if you can. It’s not always possible though, if you do take out a loan make sure you really understand what the repayment terms are. Also consider that you may not have a cash flow right away, businesses take time to get established. If you go for months or even a year without an income, will you be okay? It’s a really good idea to have at least a few months of living expenses saved up before you set out on this venture.

Your Going to Work Hard, Very Hard

You can forget about 8 hour days and scheduled lunch breaks. You are going to bust your ass for the next couple of years at least, running my own business is the hardest that I have ever worked for the least amount of money. But, it’s also the most rewarding work I’ve ever done. There is just something different about putting in the blood, sweat, and tears when it is your own business. You might not get to take a vacation for 3 years, but it will be worth it.

You Are Going to Need Help

Even if you think you can do it all on your own, make sure you have support if you need it. You can ask any family member or trusted friend to help you through difficult times. Everybody gets a cold now and then, things will come up. You are also going to be working 80 hour weeks, maybe you could get it down to a paltry 60 by hiring somebody to help out with some of the operations. It might be hard to put your trust in another person, this is your baby after all, but aside from just helping out with business tasks they can be bring fresh ideas and an outside perspective to the business. Really try not to micro-manage (again this can be hard when it’s your business), but it’s annoying for your employee and does not get good results.

So those are our top considerations when you are starting out as a small business owner. The article was a bit tongue in cheek, but for real it’s great and if it’s something that you feel called to do you should try it!

Info

Remote is a revolutionary new concept in nightlife entertainment.

Located in downtown Manhattan, it is a technology-themed cocktail lounge and new media art space unlike anything else in the world. The lounge is outfitted with over 60 video cameras – covering every square foot of the space from multiple angles – and this live video is displayed on over 100 output devices, such as CRTs, LCDs, large format plasma screens and video projectors. Into this mix of live feeds are an everchanging roster of digital and analog video artworks, animation, special effects, web-based art and interactive multimedia created by both emerging and established new media artists.

Remote officially opened on October 9th, 2001. Many nights feature special events targeting certain audiences or featuring specific artists, performers or promoters. This adaptability has already proven that the design and technical infrastructure behind Remote is versatile and flexible enough for the lounge to re-theme and re-invent itself nightly. To see a schedule of upcoming events, or to view an archive of past events, see the Calendar section.

Telepresence

Controlled Entropy Ventures (CEV), the developers of Remote, describe the lounge as a “telepresence” environment. The appeal inherent in this seemingly contradictory concept has been noted by a number of techno-sociologists working in fields like video-conferencing and Virtual Reality. At Remote, all of the cameras within the lounge are controllable by the bar patrons themselves, who can view the output of the different cameras at custom-designed Cocktail Consoles™. The Cocktail Consoles™ also allow customers to then remotely pan and tilt any camera they are viewing using a joystick. Patrons therefore”spy” on other patrons and will be “spied” on in return. The cameras act as the “remote eyeballs,” or the visual prosthetics, of the bar customers. This distortion of the usual way in which people interact, at the same time more (virtually) intimate and (physically) remote then typical bar encounters, is at the core of the fun to be had using the gadgets at Remote.

Rather than focus on the “Big Brother” association with the surveillance technology that has been co-opted and adapted to use in the lounge, CEV founders point out that their version of telepresence is used to very different ends then traditional surveillance implementations. First of all, access to the system is mutual, bilateral and consensual – nobody gets to violate anyone else’s privacy in a manner that they would not be subject to themselves. Secondly, the environment is designed to encourage exploration, experimentation and human interaction rather than to control or protect people or property.

Design

The “telepresence” capability, along with the retro-future stylings of the Cocktail Consoles™ themselves, evokes a 1960s vision of the future – part Jetsons, part 2001 A Space . Furthermore, TV screens over the bar and along the walls pick up random camera channels to create a richly textured funhouse mirror effect, where the physical arrangement of the lounge itself and the people in it are fractured and re-presented in a complex, constantly-changing, multilayered way.

The interior design of Remote was done by Jordan Parnass, of Jordan Parnass Digital Architecture. Jordan had previously designed some acclaimed office spaces and retail environments that featured the seamless incorporation of technology and electronics into sleek, innovative, contemporary environments. He also has worked extensively as a new media artist in his own right, all of which made him the perfect partner to lead the challenge of defining an appropriate context for CEV’s interactive technology.

CEV

The three partners – Mario Peebles, Van Helsinki and Brechin Mayer – are all technology start-up veterans that have long been fascinated by the social implications of Internet, video and multimedia technologies. They spent almost two years developing and implementing the technology and concepts behind Remote, pausing only to take on a project (weliveinpublic.com) for client Josh Harris (Jupiter Communications, Pseudo.com). This product used an early version of their hardware and software to create a total surveillance environment in Josh Harris’ loft that broadcast six simultaneous feeds – chosen from 48 cameras by analyzing motion sensor data – 24 hours a day for 4 months.

CEV plans to expand on the Remote concept by opening other sites in key cities around the country and abroad. Parties interested in franchise or investment opportunities should contact CEV by email at info@remotelounge.com.
